Dream Theater - Stream Of Consciousness (1997)


 

Someone expressed interest in this recently. It's the last of the "Prism Records" CDs done by Portnoy's friend Mike Bahr, but I think he continued to float around for a while under the labels "Scarred Records" and "Xanadu Records." It's a soundboard recording, but the quality is not very good because it's sourced from a webstream (get it?) back in the days when internet bandwidth and streaming abilities were not so good. The bonus track of Surrounded is the show from Nottingham, England 1993, later recounted by Portnoy on Mike Kelly's Nightwatch radio show in 1994, where Portnoy sang the end of the song after LaBrie pursued an audience member who was singly loudly and badly. You get two more bonus tracks not listed on the back cover: an unknown performance of Lie (probably from 1994 based on LaBrie's stunning vocal performance), and Charlie Dominici singing Metropolis (probably from his last show at The Ritz 1989/11/14). For those who are staunch audiophiles, I can only offer this set as MP3s. I believe this and several of the other Prism CDs (Acoustic Dreams being a definite example) have only ever been available as MP3s, so the "FLAC" versions you might find are simply disguised MP3s.

This was released on the Japanese Bondage Music label in 2002, and features three superb soundboard recordings which I consider to be essential for any DT bootleg collector. The first one is from IMP AKA Imperial Hall in Osaka 1992/11/19. This one also goes under the names Images and Tour '92 (vol. 1 of the "Soundboard Masters" series) and Osaka Samurai, and there is an audience recording of this same show which gets erroneously billed under the name Moon Bubbles as the Shibuya Kokaido in Tokyo 1992/11/18. Dream Theater - The Change Of A Change Of Seasons

This is one of the rarest DT bootlegs I have, as it was limited to just 50 physical copies. On it, you get: 1. The Chris Cintron audition of A Change Of Seasons. The back cover art says “A Change Of Seasons ’89” which is partially true. The instrumental parts were laid down in 1989, but Cintron would have performed vocals in 1990. 2. The 1993 Limelight performance of A Change Of Seasons. One of only two times ACOS got played live with “the two Kevins” Moore & LaBrie (other was Bonn, Germany 1993). 3. The “Mercy Fuck” performance of A Change Of Seasons from Old Bridge, NJ June 1995. This one sounds nice in contrast to the very noisy version of this show in circulation. 4. The sample from Dead Poet’s Society about Carpe Diem meaning “seize the day.” 5. “A Change Of Simpsons.” This is a Scenes era performance of this song which has a piece of The Simpson’s Theme included.
