Dream Theater - Stream Of Consciousness songwriting contest (2003)



In 2003, Dream Theater released Jordan Rudess' MIDI charts containing the time signatures for "S.O.C.", as well as goofy names for the individual parts of the song like "Crimson Setup" and "UK Rise," and thought it would be fun to see fans produce compositions based on these guidelines. The winners were selected based on overall musicality, as well as similarity to the actual (yet unreleased) Stream Of Consciousness song. The finalists were announced to be:

1) Andy Rowland and Ant Law
2) Daisuke Kurosawa
3) Linear Sphere
4) Richard Campbell
5) Brian Wherry
6) Redemption
7) Eric Clemenzi

It is worthwhile to familiarize yourself with these songs, because they are often passed off as leaked demos or studio tracks from Systematic Chaos and other albums.

Note that the version I'm offering of this CD is in .cue format, which can be played using VLC. I tried splitting the continuous FLAC file into individual tracks, and Audacity kept quitting unexpectedly, so I gave up on that.

This was released on the Japanese Bondage Music label in 2002, and features three superb soundboard recordings which I consider to be essential for any DT bootleg collector. The first one is from IMP AKA Imperial Hall in Osaka 1992/11/19. This one also goes under the names Images and Tour '92 (vol. 1 of the "Soundboard Masters" series) and Osaka Samurai, and there is an audience recording of this same show which gets erroneously billed under the name Moon Bubbles as the Shibuya Kokaido in Tokyo 1992/11/18. Dream Theater - The Change Of A Change Of Seasons

This is one of the rarest DT bootlegs I have, as it was limited to just 50 physical copies. On it, you get: 1. The Chris Cintron audition of A Change Of Seasons. The back cover art says “A Change Of Seasons ’89” which is partially true. The instrumental parts were laid down in 1989, but Cintron would have performed vocals in 1990. 2. The 1993 Limelight performance of A Change Of Seasons. One of only two times ACOS got played live with “the two Kevins” Moore & LaBrie (other was Bonn, Germany 1993). 3. The “Mercy Fuck” performance of A Change Of Seasons from Old Bridge, NJ June 1995. This one sounds nice in contrast to the very noisy version of this show in circulation. 4. The sample from Dead Poet’s Society about Carpe Diem meaning “seize the day.” 5. “A Change Of Simpsons.” This is a Scenes era performance of this song which has a piece of The Simpson’s Theme included.
